Pivka basin lies at the lowest passage between the Alps, Central Europe and Northern Adriatic and is one of the most strategic points in Europe. As such, this region of ancient passes (also called Ljubljana gap) witnessed numerous military maneuvers, important battles, as well as construction of fortification systems. The Park of Military History is a project in progress, which would like to take advantage of this rich heritage and built a lively museum and experiental tourism centre with the purpose of education, research and extraordinary experiences.
At the moment visitors to the Park can visit the first museum collection, which consists of the most valuable examples of heavy weapons (tanks, armoured vehicles, artillery), which were left behind in Slovenia by various armies. Tanks in particular are one of the greatest technical achievements of their era and together with the presentation of their use they present a unique experience for the expert as well as the layman visitor. The collection also hosts exhibitions Unified in Victory, which shows the path to Slovenian independence in 1991, and “Tank is a bunker and a tomb”, which presents personal stories of tank soldiers from the Pivka region in the Second World War.
After the visit to the museum you can also take a thematic path to the Alpine wall fortifications and learn more about the nature, culture and history of the strategic Pivka basin. You can also take a guided tour to the nearby underground fortress on Primož.
